BERSIH 2.0 submits eight cases on electoral roll irregularities to EC

BERSIH 2.0 is submitting eight cases on electoral roll irregularities to the attention of the Election Commission. These cases, all of which were brought to our attention by members of the public, were received over the course of the past two months.

Of the eight cases:

• Five involved individuals who were registered as voters without their consent or knowledge, with three of the five registered in constituencies they did not reside in;
• In one case the individual concerned was told by the EC that the EC did not receive her voter registration form despite having registered through an overseas Malaysian consulate in 2012, and thus would not be able to vote in the upcoming 13th general election;
• In one case the individual could not find her registration record online and thus may not be able to vote in GE-13;
• In one case facts have arisen that has made the individual suspect that a phantom voter may be using his address.

Nine cases over two months is not an exceedingly small number and may represent only the tip of the iceberg, when seen in the context of earlier concerns over the integrity of the electoral roll. We note that in several of the cases, the complainants had already approached the Election Commission.

Despite reassurances about the integrity of the electoral system, Malaysia still has a long way to go. BERSIH 2.0 remains greatly concerned about the impact of electoral roll irregularities on the upcoming election.
